Am I Suffering from Infertility?

By: Beth Ibarra

Women and men across the country dream of having children at some point in their lifetime but do not realize that that dream may never come true because of problems within their reproductive systems. People wishing and hoping to become pregnant have trouble all the time and then sometimes, out of the blue, are able to get pregnant. These problems can be temporary or even permanent for some but there are ways to solve them with doctors being involved.

Infertility is the inability for a woman to become pregnant and it is the inability for a man to provide his piece of the reproductive puzzle to a woman when trying to conceive a child. This problem can also be defined as the inability of a woman to carry a pregnancy to full term. Fertile women are women that experience a natural period of fertility before and after ovulation and are naturally fertile during the remainder of the menstrual cycle.

Both women and men can have problems with infertility, which can be a very difficult problem to deal with. The inability to have children for some people is completely devastating.

There are alternatives to conception. People that have fertility trouble can always adopt children from agencies within the United States or from other countries, they can have surrogate mothers carry their children and some people that are infertile opt to have pets instead.

Below is the method of determining how a couple might be dealing with infertility: The couple has not conceived after 12 months of contraceptive-free intercourse if the female is under the age of 34, the couple has not conceived after 6 months of contraceptive-free intercourse if the female is over the age of 35 (declining egg quality of females over the age of 35 account for the age-based discrepancy as when to seek medical intervention) and the female is incapable of carrying a pregnancy to term.

Infertility can be caused by a variety of different factors. They are genetics, diabetes, thyroid disorders, adrenal disease, toxins such as glue, chemical dusts, pesticides, volatile organic solvents or silicones and hypothalamic-pituitary factors.

The hypothalamic-pituitary factors are Kallmann syndrome, Hyperprolactinemia and Hypopituitarism. All of these problems listed above can factor into developing problems with fertility.

Treatment for fertility problems can involve medicine, surgery or both. Doctors can prescribe medicine that will stimulate the ovaries if the sperm of the man is working fine and the rest of the reproductive organs within the woman are working fine.

Other options can be in vitro fertilization, embryo transfer, tuboplasty and PGD. Tuboplasty is when the doctor will correct an obstruction of the fallopian tube, which could be leading to fertility problems.

PGD is a screening process of embryos before they are implanted into a woman for conception.
Alternative treatments available today are group psychological intervention, acupuncture and manual physical therapy.

All of these alternatives have been scientifically tested and approved for use within the United States today. The majority of the treatments listed above are usually very high in cost and more often than not have to be paid out of pocket by the patient.
