Finding An IP Location

By: Ron Subs

Being able to identify where visitors are coming from is useful information for webmasters. If you have a website that provides information or sells products, being able to display the correct language on your website, knowing the interests of your visitors and customers based on their location, and being able to pre-populate the country code on your forms are all important parts of improving your website. Web site owners are also able to take legal recourse against spammers, hackers, and fraudulent credit card use if they are able to locate the place where these activities originate from. All this information is available through a computers IP location.

An IP address is a unique number assigned to a computer by its internet service provider every time it connects to the internet and is expressed as a set of digits separated by decimal points. An IP address gives every computer on a network a unique identity that is used when sending and receiving information from other computers and web servers. The IP address is region specific because each country and region has a specific set of numbers they can use for IP addresses.

Getting the general location of any web user is possible if you know their IP address because it tells you where their internet service provider is located. Internet service providers assign computers an IP address every time they connect to the internet and the IP address contains numbers specific to the internet service provider's geographic location. It is not possible, however, to find the exact location of an internet user but general regional information is still useful in many ways.

There are many online programs and applications that will tell you an IP location if you already know the IP address as well as programs that automatically detect the IP address of website visitors. When looking up IP location you can find out the country and region where the internet service provider is located, the name of the internet service provider who owns the IP address, and sometimes the specific city where the internet service provider is located. But, ultimately it is very beneficial to find a program that takes all the guesswork out of the process and automatically gives you the information you need. There are so many other things to worry about when you are a webmaster and removing unnecessary tasks can give you more time to focus on the more important things.
